Description

Montana Educators’ AI Work Session: Fostering Student AI Literacy & Use

Please join this 6-hour professional learning work session focused on effectively and ethically integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools directly into student learning experiences in your Montana classrooms. This hands-on session is designed to equip you with strategies to move from restricting AI to teaching students how to be responsible, effective, and ethical AI users for research, creation, and learning.

The day will shift the focus from what teachers can do with AI to what students can learn and create with these powerful tools.

Session Summary: Key Learning Objectives for Student AI Use

  • Introducing AI to Students Responsibly:
    • Develop age-appropriate lessons and activities to introduce foundational AI concepts (such as prompt engineering and model limitations) to K-12 students.
    • Establish clear classroom guidelines and digital citizenship expectations for the use of AI tools.
  • AI as a Research & Study Partner:
    • Design assignments that teach students how to use generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) as a sophisticated research assistant for summarizing complex texts, generating study questions, or finding diverse perspectives.
    • Emphasize the crucial need to verify and fact-check AI-generated information.
  • Fostering Creativity and Critical Thinking with AI:
    • Explore project-based learning opportunities where students use AI tools (text, image, and music generators) for creative ideation and prototyping.
    • Redesign tasks to require critical human synthesis and refinement of AI-generated content, moving beyond simple generation.
  • Promoting Academic Integrity and Source Citation:
    • Learn how to structure assignments that naturally require students to cite their use of AI as a source or collaborator.
    • Discuss and implement practical strategies for assessing authentic student learning that goes beyond easily plagiarized work.

Please Note: A catered lunch will be provided during the work session to ensure you have time to network with colleagues and recharge before the afternoon’s hands-on activities. The $30 fee covers lunch, registration, and supplies. 6 OPI renewal units will be available for participants.
